Inspired by @wilduda posting his top 10 Barney home videos and making illustrations for each of them, here are my top 10 Sesame Street home videos.
10. Do the Alphabet - I mainly included this one because listening to, "Runnin' Down a Dream" by Tom Petty recently, I realized that it sounds just like the titular song. The other songs are some of Sesame's best letter songs, like "Dee, Dee, Dee", "J Friends", the "T Dance", "Alphabet Blues", "Alphabet Jungle", and Billy Joel singing the Alphabet Song with kids and Anything Muppets.
9. Kids' Favorite Songs - I don't care if it has all public domain songs and no classic Muppet sketches, this is a classic. It has the best versions I've ever heard of certain numbers, and it also taught me to count backwards from 10 to 1, and who can't forget the final countdown at the end of the video?
8. Kids' Favorite Songs 2 - THIS is how I remember "On Top of Spaghetti", "The Bear Went Over the Mountain", and "Duermete Mi Nina", and it's even better than the first one with kids singing and a subplot of Snuffy having to chase after a runaway meatball. It's also the video that taught us that "friends are more important than meatballs", which is a wildly true statement.
7. Elmo Loves You - This is the ultimate Sesame Street Valentine's Day special. The songs and segments in it are all about love and feelings, and are really heartwarming and joyful, if I do say so myself. In fact, I'd say the whole video is heartwarming!
6. Elmo's Sing Along Guessing Game - This is another classic. It gave us some of the show's catchiest tunes, like "I Love My Elbows", "Get Along", "One Fine Face", and "8 Balls of Fur" and I love that Elmo quizzes the contestants on the subjects of each song before they begin, so it's easy for Sesame Street fans to identify which song is coming.
5. Sing Yourself Silly - This is the one that gave us some of Sesame Street's silliest songs, it's like a VeggieTales Silly Song compilation. It has, "Honker Duckie Dinger Jamboree", "Ladybugs' Picnic", "One Banana", and "Calcutta Joe", topped off with "Put Down the Duckie", but we mainly remember this one for having James Taylor singing "Jellyman Kelly". I also love the use of various characters saying, "now that's silly". Who's not to say these songs aren't?
4. Elmo's Magic Cookbook - This video makes my mouth water every time I watch it. I especially remember the songs and sketches, like Baby Bear spelling the word "hot", "Wash Your Hands Before You Eat", and the pizza cartoon, the song, "We Did It", and the characters made out of food in the credits. In fact, I'd say it has more food than even Let's Eat: Funny Food Songs!
3. Sing Along - I loved watching this one (and guess what? I still have the DVD!) and even tried to have a sing along on our roof. (even if it had a top) It's one of Sesame's most memorable home video offerings, with the plot of Big Bird, Hoots, David, Maria, Gordon, Bob, and the kids having a sing along on the roof while Biff and Sully fix a broken TV, Madeline Kahn and Grover singing, "Sing After Me", and the "What's the Name of That Song?" finale. I also love the way the sky transitions from day to night throughout this video's framing scenes.
2. What's the Name of That Song? - What's not to love about this video? It's set outdoors, brings us lesser-known but memorable songs in an anniversary video, and it answers an age-old question (besides the obvious) topped with a finale where everyone sings together!
1. Bedtime Stories and Songs/Sleepytime Songs and Stories - This is one of, if not Sesame's calmest and most sleep-inducing production. The whole video is pretty heartwarming and I'd say it's perfect for viewing before bed.
I was going to include Get Up and Dance, but replaced it with Elmo Loves You at the last minute.
What are YOUR top 10 Sesame Street home videos? Be sure to share them with me, and I'll see you all next time! This post has been brought to you by the letters H and V and the number 10.
